High Quality, Noticable Improvement. Mar 09, 2009

I installed this on a Toyota 08 Rav4 v6. I am a noob when it comes to car parts, but I do my research thoroughly, and I don't consider myself inept. The loss of a star explanation now begins:
1. This air filter is for the ENGINE (under the hood)-- *NOT* the cabin air filter!! If anyone (reviewers or manufacturers) mentioned this ANYWHERE, some frustration could have been avoided.
If you didn't knock yourself out from smacking yourself over my stupidity, read on.
2. Not only was the documentation provided with the air filter lacking for someone of my experience, but the actual owners manual to the vehicle included 0 documentation as well (it did, however, provide info for the cabin air filter. What a tease.) Anyways, I located the engine air filter by process of elimination, and began dis-assembly: Really, really tight squeeze. Moreover, the Lip of the filter does not fit all the way around the frame of the bottom basket; only two sides do, and I was worried that the fit wasn't correct when I replaced the top part; resulting in me repeating the process. I remained unsure of proper fit until I started the car up and drove it.
Now the goods:
I noticed a slight decrease in acceleration lag time, and a slight increase in MPG. On top of that, I mentioned my ordeal to a few thorough car&racing enthusiasts, who immediately named K&N as a company that makes quality products that produces results. That was Re-assuring.
In sum, I highly recommend this filter along w/ an oil kit, with the reservation of being prepared to take apart components under the hood.

Sometimes it helps, sometimes it don't. Mar 29, 2011

This is the second K&N filter I've purchased. Admittedly, K&N's biggest claim for their replacement filter is horsepower increase, which it probably does. My RAV4 V6 engine already had plenty of power, so I really couldn't tell any difference. It's other claim is an increase in fuel economy. When I replaced the filter in my '06 Camry, my mileage jumped from 29mpg to 35mpg. When I replaced the filter in my '07 RAV4, I didn't see any change in the mileage. It's still nice to know I won't need to buy another air filter for it though.
K&N All the way Oct 16, 2011
By gmsixty I always use K&N's for my cars. The money you spend up front is made up for over time as you can clean these instead of replacing them. These filters last for years if maintained and offer a slight performance/MPG increase without voiding your warranty. The increase is minor, but since you're going to change your air filter anyway, why not get a K&N? Especially at Amazon's price.
Not really satisfied. Sep 23, 2011
By bnz As an air filter it works. I placed this in my 2010 Rav4 as I was looking for a little better performance when hauling a small trailer. I noticed that with this filter (on two tanks of gas) my city mpg went from 20-21 mpg down to 18-19 mpg. Placed the Toyota airfilter back in the vehicle and I am back to 20-21 mpg again. On the hwy I was getting 1 mpg less with this filter. I normally get 26-27 and with this I am getting 25. There is no difference in mileage when pulling my trailer from my past results. I also notice no difference at all in performance of the vehicle. For the price of this filter, even with it being a lifetime filter, I would expect at least the same performance as the stock Toyota filter.
A bit pricey, but it does the job. Sep 09, 2011
By Hepcat Vince I've used K&N filters in all of my street and competition vehicles for the last 26 years. Since I tend to own my vehicles so long, the return on investment (when using a K&N) is pretty darn good. What I've learned over the years is that you have to 1) check the filter periodically to make sure it is not too dirty, and 2) properly clean, and don't over oil the filter.
I have purchased the filter cleaning kit, and it is very effective. I usually let the cleaner soak for a good 20 minutes before thoroughly rinsing the filter with warm water. I then let the filter completely dry out for the better part of the day. I then lightly oil the filter with the K&N oil, let it sit for a while to make sure I've got good coverage. After that, I use a paper towel to clean up any excess oil. This is where folks tend to have trouble--they either wait until the filter is completely caked with dirt before they clean it, or they over oil the filter. When the filter is over oiled and then installed, that oil can coat the sensors in the intake tract (mass air sensor), leading to improper readings and poor engine performance.
On the RAV4, the only issue I have is with the design of the air box, not the filter itself. This can make installation trickier than most cars, but it takes only a few minutes at most to do it. To make it easier, I lifted the front edge of the airbox, leaving the back part hinged in place. I inserted the filter by holding it from the bottom and pushing it towards the top and back (so that I'm holding it in the lid of the airbox. I then pull my hand out, while closing the lid as I do so--the lid then properly seals, and I attach the retaining clips.
I'm not sure of any performance gains (K&N claims a 9hp gain over stock)--I rarely have to dip into the throttle, since the 3.5L vvti V6 is plenty powerful for such a small ute. I am interested to see if it improves gas mileage, and have been tracking it--in city driving, I average 21-22.4 mpg (calculated). On the highway, I average 26-28 mpg, depending on conditions and cargo.
